Now we would like you to think of sexaul experiences you had after the age of twelfe with a family member or relative, including cousins, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, grandparents, mother or father, or a guardian or close friend of a parent. (If this relationship was described in a previous section, do not repeat it) Pick the three most important to you and answer the following questions.

Finally, we would like you to think of any sexual experience that occured to you after the age of 12, which you did not consent ot. That is, a sexual experience which was forced on you, or done against your will, or which you didn't want to happen. (Once again, do not repeat describing a relationship you described earlier.) Pick the three most important and answer the following questions.

Finkelhor (1984)

Think back to the time when you were growing up, before you were a6 years old. We are interested in any sexual things which may have occured during that time with someone at least 5 years older than you. These things may have been sexual abuse or may not have been sexual abuse; we are interested in both kinds of things.

During the time before you 16, were any sexual things done to you or with you by a person at least 5 years older than you?

Before you were 16 were any attempts made to do sexual things to you by a person at least 5 years older?

Do you consider these experiences to have been sexual abuse?

Keckley Market Research (1984)

Thinking back on your own childhood, do you think that you were ever asked to participate or do anything sexually as a child that you did not want to do or felt uncomfortable about? (This excludes playing among peers and dates.)

Kercher and McShane (1984)

"Were you ever sexually abused as a child?" Earlier in the survey, sexual abuse had been defined as contacts or interactions between a child and an adult when the child is being used for the sexual stimulation of the perpetrator or another person. Sexual abuse may be committed by a person under the age of 18 when that person is significantly older than the victim or when the perpetrator is in the position of power or control over another child.

Lewis (1985)

1. When you were a child, can you remember having any experience you would now consider sexual abuse - like someone trying or succeding in having any kind of sexual intercourse with you, or anything like that?

2. When you were a child, can you remember having any kind of experience that you would now consider sexual abuse involving someone touching you, or grabbing you, or kissing you, or rubbing against your body either in a public place or in private - or anything else like that?

3. When you were a child, can you remember any kind of experience that you would now consider sexual abuse involving someone taking nude photographs of you, or someone exhibiting parts of their body to you, or someone performing some sex act in your presence - or anything like that?

4. When you were a child, can you remember any kind of experience that you would now consider sexual abuse involving oral sex or sodomy - or anything like that?

Miller (1976)

Has anyone ever tried to sexually molest you?

  2. Did anyone ever try or succeed in having any kind of sexual intercourse with you against your wishes before you turned 14?

Wyatt (1985)

It is now generally realized that many women, while they were children or adolescents, have had a sexual experience with an adult or someone older than themselves. By sexual, I mean behaviours ranging from someone exposing themselves (their genitals) to you, to someone having intercourse with you. These experiences may have a relative, a friend of the family, or a stranger. Some experiences are very upsetting and painful while others are not, and some may have ocurred without consent.

Now I'd like you to think bach to your childhood and adolescense and remember if you had any sexual experiences with a relative, family friend, or stranger. Describe each experience completely and separately.

  1. During childhood and adolescence, did anyone ever expose themselves (their sexual organs) to you?
  2. During childhood and adolescence, did anyone masturbate in front of you?
  3. Did a realtive, family friend or stranger ever touch or fondle your body, including breasts or genitals, or attempt to arouse you sexually?
  4. During childhood and adolescence, did anyone try to have you arouse them, or touch their body in a sexual way?
  5. Did anyone rub their genitals against your body in a sexual way?
  6. During childhood and adolescence, did anyone attempt to have intercourse with you?
  7. Did anyone have intercourse with you?
  8. Did you have other sexual experiences involving a relative, family friend or stranger?
