Sexual orientation evident as a child

UPI Science News Mon, 1 July (1996)

SAN FRANCISCO, July 1 (UPI) -- Children as young as four can demonstrate behavior that reveals their sexual orientation, a researcher said Monday.

A study presented at the American Psychological Society meeting in San Francisco indicated that 75 percent of boys who act extremely feminine at an early age become adult homosexuals and 10 percent of girls who are ``tom boys'' become lesbians.

Michael Bailey, an associate professor of psychology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., said that , ``the correlation between a gender atypical childhood and a homosexual adulthood is more closely linked in men than in women.''

Less is known about a woman's sexual orientation because there are fewer long-term studies about women, and lesbians in particular, who are outnumbered by gay men 10 to one.
