Recidivism among sex offenders: a follow-up study of 841 Norwegian sex offenders

International Journal of Law & Psychiatry 9, 95- 102 (1986)

21.7% of rapists reoffended, compared with 10% of child abusers; 10% of the rapists were reconvicted for rape, 6.8% of the child abusers for child abuse; average follow-up period was 12 years.

"It may of course be argued that most repeat sexual offences remain unreported. Our data show, however, that many of our males in later life have contact with the justice system, but that only a small percentage are convicted for sexual crimes."

"The fairly low recidivism rate among sex offenders may have significant criminal policy implications... One could argue that sanctions against these crimes implemented by the judicial and prison systems seem to have had excellent effect with regard to reoffences in the area of sexuality."
