Subject: Bibliography of research on pedophilia

Dr. Kate Thomas, of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutes Sexual Disorders Clinic, was kind enough to supply this bibliography and permission for posting to NMV.

For an excellent layman's discussion of pedophilia, see "Lead Us Not into Temptation: Catholic Priests and the Sexual Abuse of Children," by Jason Berry, Doubleday, New York, 1992. While the book focusses on pedophile priests, it will be highly relevant to anyone struggling to understand this issue in general. I found it to be well written, objective, and balanced.

Subject: Minor changes to bibliography

I'd like to retract the Haeberle book from the bibliography. I haven't read it myself, but it has been indicated to me that, at least for some of us, it may do more harm than good. Here's another entry to make up for it:

Olafson, E., Corwin, D.L. (1993). Modern history of child sexual abuse awareness: Cycles of discovery and suppression. Child Abuse and Neglect, 17, 7-24.

I'd like to put in a warning that I haven't read most of these papers myself; that's a summer project. Thus, I can't vouch for the harmlessness of any of this material. Hopefully, I will be able to put together an annotated bibliography, which will probably be a lot more helpful.

If anybody out there has suggestions for more papers or warnings about the literature, I'd like to hear from you.

May you all have strength in healing,

Somebody Somewhere
