5.5.1) Books (Last Updated 3/10/93)

These first few entries are highly reccomended for anyone dealing with
survivors issues, and are constantly in high-demand. Any bookstore that
carries books on these topics is almost guarenteed to have the following books
in stock.

Bass, Ellen and Laura Davis:
_The Courage to Heal: A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse_.
[When Mike Lew asked Ellen Bass about a Courage to Heal for men she said
that Courage to Heal was for men, all you need do is switch the
pronouns as you read. (or something like that...)]

_The Courage to Heal Work Book_ for men and women

_Allies in Healing_ a courage to heal book for the SO's or support people of
survivors.

I would recomend this book because it has little or no ax to grind, is non-
judgmental, is writen by survivors and has lots of survivor stuff in it and,
most important for me, shows me what surviving is. I finaly admitted my abuse
after reading it and got into therapy, untill then I was "Perfect". I
recommend this book to anyone who even thinks that they, or some one they
know may have been abused. (IMHO-- PANDA)

        The courage to heal workbook
: for women and men survivors
                ................. Laura Davis
        Allies in healing :
                when the person you
                love was sexually
                abused ......... Laura Davis

        The sexual healing journey :
                a guide for survivors
of sexual abuse .. Wendy Maltz

Also, John Bradshaw's books are pretty good for healing shame, and realizing
that the abuse wasn't my fault. Healing the Shame that Binds You, Bradshaw on:
The Family, and Homecoming: reclaiming and championing your inner child are the
books of his that I know.

For working on boundaries, Pia Mellody's books Facing Codependence and
Breaking Free: a Workbook for Facing Codependence are pretty good.

These books should be available at larger bookstores; check the recovery,
psychological and "self-help" sections. The following books are listed
alphabeticlly by author. These books are on survivor topics in general. A
couple more specific sections follow. (Unfortunately, due to lack of info, we
only have a few specific sections at this time. More to come in the future.)
If you have any recommendations or corrections for these lists, please let me
know, and it will be added on. (Email address is krikket@meltdown.chi.ilüs)

G.S. Goodman, E. P. Taub, D. P. H. Jones, P. England, L. K. Port, L. Rudy,
and L. Prado, with commentaries by J. E. B. Myers and G. B. Milton "Testifying
in Criminal Court: Emotional Effects of Criminal Court Testimony on Child
Sexual Assault Victims"

the description of the bood reads:
"Increased reports of child sexual abuse are bringing unprecedented numbers of
children into contact with the criminal justice system, raising fears that
victims will be further harmed in the process. In this study, the adverse
effects of testifying in court were examined among 218 children. The results
show how testifying in the traditional manner interferes with children's
ability to answer questions, thus undermining the very purpose of the trial:
discovery of truth.
'Has immediate, far-reaching, and positive implications for child abuse
     litigation...'"

University of Pennsylvania. Also details relationship between
        male bonding and female objectification.
