Kentaro Miura
Kentaro Miura (三浦 建太郎, Miura Kentarō, July 11, 1966 – May 6, 2021) was a Japanese manga artist. He was best known for his acclaimed dark fantasy series Berserk, which began serialization in 1989 and continued until his death. As of 2021, Berserk had more than 50 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. In 2002, Miura received the Award for Excellence at the 6th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prizes.
Both Berserk and Gigantomakhia feature blatant erotic fan-service of prepubescent girls (see for instance, volume 29, chapter 252 of Berserk). When Tokyo proposed a ban on drawn child pornography, Miura drew a protest comic, complete with references to drawn porn magazine Comic LO and various popular “loli” characters from anime and erotic games. An English-translated version of Miura's protest comic is available online, though we have yet to verify its accuracy.[1]
Many prominent manga artists wrote obituary remarks following Miura's death[2]. Love Hina and Negima creator Ken Akamatsu shared that Miura was a fan of his character Yue Ayase[3], and that whenever she ended up in a sexual situation he would get so excited he would send Akamatsu a letter via fax. Akamatsu, himself a defender of lolicon and shotacon in artwork, posted the following to Twitter (translated):
"May Kentaro Miura-sensei rest in peace. Miura was very fond of Yue Ayase from Negima. Whenever Yue got in an erotic pinch, he would send me a fax in excitement and was always happy to receive permission from Seruhiko-sensei, a teacher in Negima".[4]
