Pasteur Joseph Doucé

Joseph Doucé (b. 1945, Saint-Truiden, Belgium, †1990) was a co-founder of ILGA, author of La pédophilie en question, leader of French support groups for sexual minorities including pedophiles, and a Baptist pastor. Born to a poor, Catholic peasant family, he pursued religious and military careers in order to educate himself and integrate with French society. In 1967, he left the Catholic Church to become a Baptist pastor. In 1975 he received a scholarship from the World Council of Churches to study sexology at the Free University in Amsterdam. In September 1976, he established the Centre du Christ Libérateur in Paris, commonly called Paris' "gay church." He ministered to, and sought social acceptance for, many sexual minorities who were then marginal even in the mainstream "gay" movement: transsexuals, transvestites, sadomasochists, and pedophiles. As one obituary on a Christian website recalled for "LGBT+ History Month": "Before most LGBT+ Christian movements came into existence, there was Pastor Joseph Doucé".[1]

In 1982, Doucé obtained French nationality. He was arrested, however, in 1988, for being on the mailing list of L'Espoir (Hope), a French pro-pedophile publication by the 1st wave MAP movement organization CRIES. He was quickly released, but the police reportedly continued to harass him. Two years later, a pair of men identifying themselves as police officers asked Doucé to come in for questioning. His tortured body was found several months later. No one was ever convicted of his murder, though members of the Secret Service were arrested (and released). There was widespread speculation that this crime was motivated by Doucé's activism on pedophilia and other issues.[2]

Doucé's body was not released for burial until July, 1992, and then only under the condition that the burial be private, and there be no grave stone placed by the family. A marker was eventually placed by Rev. Hans Visser,[3] author (with Donald Mader) of Misunderstood intimacy - A pastoral approach to pedophilia (1999),[4] and leader of the Pauluskerk (St. Paul's Church) in Rotterdam, a parish of the Netherlands Reformed Church. In 1993, the Pauluskerk issued a memorial volume for Doucé, Voor alles pastor: de zorg van Joseph Doucé voor sexuele minderheden (Pastor before all else: Joseph Doucé's ministry for sexual minorities), with essays on each area of Doucé's concerns. The Pauluskerk's general sexuality committee (in 1991) also renamed itself the Doucé Committee in his honor.[5]

Excerpts from La pédophilie en question
